How to become a motion designer
Motion design sits between graphic design and animation — you make things move with intent, whether that's a UI transition, an explainer, or a brand ident. The barrier to entry is a reel that proves you can time and craft motion, not a certificate.
- 1
Master the core software
After Effects is the industry default; add Cinema 4D or Blender for 3D. Learn keyframes, easing and the twelve principles of animation cold.
- 2
Build a reel, not a portfolio
60–90 seconds of your best motion, tightly edited, best work first. Personal projects and reanimations of existing brands are fine — the craft is what's judged.
- 3
Specialise a little
UI motion, brand animation, and film/broadcast are different markets. Lean into one so your reel reads as intentional.
- 4
Apply and freelance in parallel
Studios hire from reels; brands hire freelancers. Do both — see the freelance and junior motion pages.
